For most women, the topic of marriage is an emotionally charged one. Many little girls grow up daydreaming about their wedding. They talk about the dress they want and the type of ring they want, and even fantasize about what their husband will look like.

Unfortunately, wanting to get married puts women at risk of exploitation. Men who love the free labor a girlfriend offers don't always intend to marry her, even when she makes it clear that a ring is what she wants.

Hence, the term "shut-up ring." A shut-up ring is an engagement ring given to a woman by a man who doesn't want to marry her. He gives it as a way of kicking the can down the road, keeping her quiet when she should be talking about the issues in the relationship.

Shut-up rings are cruel, yet they are increasingly common. Are you worried your fiance is offering you a shut-up ring? These are the warning signs to look for, speaking as someone who has received them before.
