As a longtime suburban forager, I fully support this message. Just be sure to learn what is edible in your area and test a small amount first for any allergic reactions (like itchy throat or rash).

Also, the only food that has an actual expiration date is baby food. Everything else is a "Best By" or "Use By", which is for quality not safety. As long as it passes the sight and smell test, most food is fine to eat after that date. Eggs can be checked by putting in a glass of water. If it stands up on end, use it soon. If it floats, toss it.

I've been doing this a lot for the past year, as I am fortunate to live in a place where many edible plants grow wild and in gardens. Foraging and eating food grown on the land you live on cannot help but increase your love and respect for that land... too many Americans have no real sense of place because they think they have to get their food from a corporation that charges a premium for unhealthy slop and wastes unfathomable amounts of food rather than allow a deprived person to eat.
