Bertrand* is a man who I don’t envy. In fact, I don’t think many people do envy him. At 32 years old, he works a job that he actively hates in, surrounded by people he hates. His 18-year-old love interest admitted she’s gay.

People notice that Bertrand gets into weird arguments with people he shouldn’t. When he’s at bars, he’s belligerent. Oh, and almost all of his friends turned their backs on him.

As much as I don’t envy him, I don’t pity him, either. You see, Bertrand is a man who ruined his life by his own hand—a story that I see more and more frequently as days pass. Let me explain how this all started.

There are few things that Bertrand cares more about than being admired by other men.

Yes, before we begin, I’m going to point out that Bertrand is straight as an arrow. However, he’s one of those guys who cares way too much about what other people think. More specifically, he’s a man who wants to be a man’s man—everyone else be damned.

Bertrand is the type of guy who needs to be the Big Wolf on Campus, the Head Honcho, and the Alpha Male. If a guy outshines him, he’ll be the one to cut that guy down. If there’s a wealthier, more famous guy, Bertrand will suck up to that guy so that he can appear just as famous.

Women take a backseat for Bertrand, but I’ll get into that later. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he was gay because of how much he prioritizes men.
