Been there but only for 5 days, visited a 200 year old Zen temple and had tea with the master and his wife. He told my dad, "let's both get older," and my dad lasted another 11 years. We celebrated his birthday tonight. We did not tell his widow why we were getting together tonight, she didn't even know what day it was and to make her cry yet again would serve no purpose.
This sounds like a blast! I don't know much about Japanese culture but I don't think I'd have to in order to enjoy this.
As a point of interest, Kat (my wife) and I have been exhibitors at hundreds of shows (hand crafted organic aromatherapy and skin care). Every show we pay a site fee no matter how large or small the gig. Usually the bigger the gig, the bigger the site fee (every show is a gamble). We have a flat sitte fee and we go about our day. Food vendors often pay a percentage of what they make. Sound unfair? I think it is. They also usually have a team of employees and all manner of overhead and preparation in their off-hours and still need to turn a profit to make the hustle worthwhile. There's all sorts of considerations that add to the cost. Does this justify a $17 burger? No fucking way. That's a ton of money for a typical American meal. It better have truffle oil and single malt whiskey in it for that price. Suffice to say, as long as people pay that they'll keep charging it- but they're getting charged (steeply insofar as I've seen) for being there too.
At a festival in Japan, people were dancing in the streets and playing large Japanese drums and handing out what I thought was water. It was super hot out, so I slammed it back. It wasn't water - lol - but Shōchū! Lots of fun was had!
