Now this is fascinating. I love Marilyn Monroe, so the title struck me immediately. I was going to do a bit of a historical and lyrical thing, but I see @Kaleberg already did!

But yeah...the idea that women had to have insurance against men who were wankers is - hopefully, at least - a sign of waning times. 💜

If you listen to the song "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend", you'll hear the clever line, "That's when those louses go back to their spouses." The song was written for the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" which was based on the book of that name by Anita Loos. The subtitle was "The Intimate Diary of a Professional Lady". She wrote a number of books set in the demimonde as did Collette in France who is noted for her story "Gigi" which was also turned into a musical.

If a woman wasn't married, she was on her own, so men were expected to give gifts of jewelry and real estate to their mistress. Cash would have made her a prostitute. He was usually married to a woman chosen by the family for strategic reasons. Women have a lot more independence now, but it is also much easier to divorce and there is less dynastic pressure even among the wealthy. Maybe it started when Edward VIII stepped down as king of England to marry a divorcee, but the marriages may be a lot more about love or at least sexual attraction nowadays than about familial business concerns.
